-- BEWARE PROCRASTINATION |
| ECCLESIASTES11.4 Whoever watches the wind will not plant; whoever looks at the clouds will not reap. |
The person Solomon describes here is far too cautious to be an entrepreneur, or to take executive action of any kind. Perhaps he is even looking to excuse for his inactivity – protesting that he cannot sow because the wind might blow the seed away, and that he cannot reap yet because he can see some clouds and it might start raining. The direction and strength of the wind rarely remain constant, however, and clouds very often pass over and precipitate their contents elsewhere. Procrastination, it has been said, is the thief of time -- that most valuable possession that is bestowed in equal measure on rich and poor alike at the beginning of each day, a resource that can be squandered on idleness and procrastination, or invested in productive achievement. Do we have the courage and drive to take creative action and make things happen – or are we unduly cautious, anxious and reticent, waiting for conditions to be absolutely perfect, perhaps because we are afraid to act in case we make a mistake? Repeated procrastination can become a habit -- and habits shape our character and our life. In the words of Napoleon Hill again, “Sow an Act, and you reap a habit – Sow a Habit and you reap a character – Sow a Character and you reap a Destiny”. How aware are you of your habits, both good and bad – of those you need to change and those you need to develop? |
