Once again Luke takes us back to the Old Testament roots of certainty, as Mary is inspired to stress the importance of Jesus the Messiah to the people of Israel, and to recall the promises made to their ancestor, Abraham, so long ago. As Paul explains when discussing those same promises, God sometimes speaks of things not yet in existence as if they were already in existence (Romans 4:17), because he has the power to bring them about when the time is right -- and that is precisely what Mary was inspired to do here. Such is the certainty of those future events, they are spoken of as if they had already taken place, because God will make them happen. So it is that at Christ's return to establish that kingdom, God will show his strength, as we just read in various prophecies, he will scatter the proud, and put down the mighty from their thrones of power (Revelation 11:15). He will also help His servant Israel and crush her enemies -- and fulfill the promises made to Abraham and his seed forever. When carefully examined, the utterances of Mary and Zachariah and others in these sections are seen not to be pious waffle, but meaningful messages containing specific references to important events both past and future. |
